Mission Statement | Advisory Committee | Technical Committee

The M. Theo Kearney Foundation of Soil Science was created to encourage and support research in the fields of soils, plant nutrition, and water science within the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the University of California. Its five-year missions are dedicated to issues of public concern.

The goals of the 2001-2006 mission, "Soil Carbon and California Terrestrial Ecosystems," are to

understand mechanisms and processes governing the storage and flow of carbon in soils that support California's diverse ecosystems;

quantify impacts of anthropogenic inputs of water, nutrients, and pollutants, as well as physical disturbance, on transformations and transport of carbon in soils;

assess the roles of soils in emissions and consumption of greenhouse carbon gases;

identify and analyze strategies and policy options for soil carbon management that optimize natural resource utilization and mitigate adverse effects of global climate change.

Knowledge of the dynamics of soil carbon transformations in California's diverse and intensely managed ecosystems must be the foundation of the development of science-based management strategies for responding to global climate change. Determining the social and economic impacts of soil carbon management is an essential component in developing strategies to help the State maintain a competitive advantage in sustaining environmental quality and agricultural productivity.

The Kearney Foundation was established in 1951 through an endowment managed by the University of California Board of Regents. It is named in honor of Martin Theodore Kearney, a prominent agricultural leader in the history of California's San Joaquin Valley. It was Kearney's bequest of his 5400-acre estate to the University of California that ultimately led to the establishment of the Foundation.
